Brenda Davis: A Self-Taught Visionary A Life in Color

 Arts by Brenda Davis was a black, self-taught artist from Alabama who captured her visions with a creativity seen in her vivid paintings. Her work; bright colors, complex forms, and religious meanings have propelled her into the limelight and into the hearts of many.

A Humble Beginning

Brenda Davis was born in 1962 and grew up in Tuskegee, Alabama. She experienced a lot of depression in her difficult childhood, losing her mother and two aunts all at once in a traffic accident. She was put to work in the fields by her father where she worked long hours.  She had a difficult time learning in school and quit school as soon as she could.  She became a mother to two sons and was a single mother until marrying their father a few years later.

After a tragic event that rendered Brenda Davis and her family homeless, she experienced a vision.  After this, she could not stop trying to record this vision and many others that followed.  Davis’s artwork was inspired by her constant dreams and visions. Many times, she referred to her paintings as being filled with a heavenly realm, angels, or divine mythological creatures and places. She was a grounded person whose work represents a combination of the earthly and the celestial, the prosaic and the spiritual of experiencing life and the Universe.

Brenda Davis had no artistic training throughout her years, however her unique style was born from her dreams and visions: daring colors, unerring patterns, immersed in spirituality. She is considered an outsider and visionary artist.

The world was shocked when Davis died this year 2022 making her one of the last known visionary artists alive today.  If it were not for her impressive art work, she could not have left a big mark in society. Her paintings are important rare views into the psyche of a visionary.
