Woodie Long: The Self Taught Maestro And His Art Of Joy

Image
Arts by Woodie Long Jolly-hued, optimistically themed and creatively inspiring, Woodie Long was an American folk artist par excellence; a memory painter, his life history itself is a tale of how creativity can spring from the most unlikely of surroundings. Woodie Long was a man born in 1942 in Plant City, Florida, and whose childhood was a traveling story of a migrant farmer’s son. Especially the life of an artist that travels from place to place, which is expressed in both struggles and aesthetic beauty of locations, shaped his work. Of all the ways one could proceed in the course of an artistic career, Long was to embark upon this in a decidedly roundabout fashion. When he became an adult, he worked for years as a house painter but had to quit as he developed health issues.  When a daughter asked him by mail for some family history, he answered her in the only way he could, with a paint brush.  This began his  two decades of painting the landscapes of his mind and the ...

Documenting the Rise of a Self-Made African American Female Artist, Bernice Sims

Image
Art by Bernice Sims , was an autodidact who was born in Alabama. Late in her life, she became a talented painter.  As one of the folk pioneers in the art of telling her life stories, Sims' artwork exemplifies endurance and innovation. Early Life and Background to Artistic Development Bernice Sims was born in 1926 in the rural area of south Alabama. She was a young girl when she experienced extreme social and economic difficulties. Like many black people living in the segregated South, Sims had very little exposure to art at a young age.   Bernice was fascinated by some ladies who painted with oil on canvas at the local country store she visited. This planted the seeds of her wanting to try painting for herself one day but she never had a chance to try.  She became a mother and reared six children after her husband deserted the family.  Bernice Sims worked at different jobs and helped others to register to vote during the 1960s when the civil rights movement was build...

The story of Bessie Harvey, a black woman painter who emerged through thick and thin, painting her own way.

Image
Arts by Bessie Harvey who spent most of her life inTennessee, genuinely created spiritual and symbolic sculptures and paintings as her personal best contributions to the genre of folk art. Her ability to carve out something from natural materials was the product of a life of struggle and a belief in beauty and love coming from God. Early Life and Inspiration Born in 1929 in Dallas, Georgia, Bessie Harvey had to struggle right from the start of her early childhood. She was born into an impoverished family during the Great Depression. She was the 13th child in her family, living in the South during a time of racial discrimination. She lost her father at a young age and was left with an alcoholic mother and had no adult guidance.  She found comfort in nature and eventually faith in God which grounded her. As a child, she made dolls from sticks that became her best friends. Her love for the outdoors became one of her prime sources of inspiration. Trees and other such objects ha...

Thornton Dial: The Black Autodidact Whose Art Revolutionized the Art Industry

Image
Arts by Thornton Dial was a black man who worked in Alabama factories for many years.  Always creative with found, thrown away materials, he began to make sculpture and paintings. These were filled with messages about race, poverty, and the hardships of the common man.  Thornton Dial’s art  wasfar from being ornate or refined; instead it was crude, authentic and sensational. Born in Alabama, Dial was not your conventional artist. He did not attend an art college or paint in a posh art studio. His workshop was his backyard and his material? Junk! He was such a creative person; he used any material he found: old tires, rusty metal pieces, parts of fabric, and old yard furniture. Dial’s path from a textile mill employee to railroad worker to a star artist is simply wonderful. This he did despite the fact that he had no professional training. But he did not tire of making art that was a testament to identity politics for his people- the oppressed. His work focused on such im...

A Humble Beginning Brenda Davis was born in 1962 and grew up in Tuskegee, Alabama.
